Not all the Master Dreamwrights were pleased with the coming of Dreamstrike, and in fact many were angered by it. A group of them, the Entropy Coalition, secluded themselves and began exploring ways to counter this new and terrible power. They turned to the deep chaos outside the city walls for their answer. They believed they could find a way to pull the raw energy of the chaos into Underlight and turn it against the Dreamstrike Masters. But their attempts to bring that energy inside the city would have disastrous results.
The chaotic forces outside had intensified since the city's creation... the pressure of the raw essence swirling against the city walls had only increased. As the Entropy Coalition furthered their efforts to breach into the deep chaos, they unknowingly weakened the walls of the city, the barrier holding back the chaos. Small rips and breaks began forming in the walls, just big enough to permit creatures of chaos to enter the city: Nightmares.
The Entropy Treatise
To begin with, we of the Entropy Coalition would like to express our deepest sorrow for bringing this terror upon the Underlight. We have written this treatise on the Nightmares of the Dream, though, to help the citizens of Underlight understand the Nightmares. To begin with, you must understand that the Nightmares are neither Good, nor Bad, but merely chaotic. We tend to regard that as Bad because of our tendency of organization. The Nightmares use the chaos to control the soul of a dreamer not yet able to Dream, one unshielded by the walls of thought.
With this coherence, they are able to enter the Dream with form and power. But because they have no real coherence of their own, when they are collapsed, they disappear completely, leaving the trapped essence of a Dreamer. The Nightmares feed of the chaos, though, not the trapped Dreamer. Though we, the Entropy Coalition have not yet found a way to penetrate the chaos, and reach the trapped Dreamer within, we believe there is a way.
Perhaps even their language will be translatable, for even in chaos, there are patterns. Is not chaos itself a pattern?
To conclude this treaty, we would state our opinions and beliefs on the Nightmares. Again, they are neither Bad, nor Good, but merely chaotic. If chaos is in the way, it must be removed. We believe though, that we as citizens of Underlight must search to find a way to penetrate the chaos of the Nightmares and reach the morality and intelligence of the trapped soul. If the soul were able to be reached, the Nightmares could easily be removed as a threat from the outside in. Thus speaks the Entropy Coalition, at its last meeting. Now we are the . . .
