Art Research

Art History

The art of FlameRuin was one of the late DreamSmith Balthus most erratic works. Originally intended to create a small spark (for lighting the pipes he was most fond of) he accidentally created a raging ball of flame, which promptly burnt off what little hair he had. Not to be deterred by the numerous jests and laughter, the master worked day and night in his study, slowly refining the flame to become what it is today, concentrated and ranged. It is rumored he was able to burn 5 senior DreamWrights hair off before escaping, laughing madly. He also later shared his research with his good friend Tenrik, who went on to develop FlameSear.

Alternate History

The Art of FlameRuin is an Art which creates a projectile called a Flame, or a Bolt. It was stumbled upon by a benevolent Dreamer named Ignicolist. Ignicolist, which means Fire Worshipper, was a normal man, who lived a normal life.

Once, when he was a boy, he accidentally placed his hand in a fire, and hence was Named.

Soon after his Accident and his Naming, Ignicolist was apprenticed to a DreamWright, despite his young age. His parents, and the Dreamwright believed that age was not a factor in determining experience, nor was it a quantitative measure of determining whether on was capable of great things.

Then came The Great Loss.

Ignicolist had not learned anything of importance in his time spent in the Dream as apprentice to the Dreamwright. His Fate was sealed, however, and after The Great Loss he was destined to never Dream again.

While in Cloudsbreak, Ignicolist studied an worked on his Arts, known as Science. As an apothecary, he studied the elements of Helium and Oxygen, things that are not even known in the Dream, where all is made of Resilience, Lucidity, and Willpower. Ignicolist longed very much to be a part of a Dream and retain his Lucid Arts. This caused him to study most closely a substance known as Water.

Water had the unique property of corroding all substances placed in it. Stone, metal -- all was in some way worn down by Water's presence.

Even Sodium was worn down by water, but its reaction was something more like an explosion, rather than erosion.

Sodium and Water, when combined produced a great explosion as heat was created. Ignicolist, using his skill as an apothecary, began to perfect what he called an Art. Eventually, he had perfected it -- the Flame from the reaction could be channeled by the combined use of the Will, and the Lucid elements of the Dream.

Gatekeepers are the warriors of the Dream, and hence the Flame can be used for War. Fatesenders are the tricksters of the Dream, and hence the Flame can confuse other Dreamers, or play practical jokes, such as Fireworks.

The Art was carried into the Dream by Ignicolist's son, when Ignicolist was very old. The Son soon became a very powerful Dreamer, as aided by the Lucid Art of FlameRuin. Using his power, the Son pulled his Father into a state residing between the Dream and Cloudsbreak.

Some say that he even possesses other Dreamers and enters the Dream under a variety of names, such as NightLite.

Notes

While casting the FlameRuin, the evoker must remain motionless, or the art fails.
