Once upon a dream, the Darkmare Xatoc sat outside of Threshold, hiding in the shadows. As he watched, he saw dreamer after dreamer pass by. He saw these dreamers writing upon strange devices. After one of the dreamers left, he dashed out from his hiding place, and grabbed the item, a small, coiling object, with small words inscribed on it. From the many conversations he'd overheard, he knew that this item was called a "codex".
Rushing back to the Darkmare Tehthu with his prize, he proudly showed it to the chief Dark Mare. As Tehthu gazed at the alien item with feigned interest, he turned his curious gaze towards Xatoc.
"Why do you bring me this...this dreamer toy, you foolish Darkmare?" he asked.
Xatoc smiled mischievously at Tehthu.
"I have a plan, great master...a plan for us to overrun the dreamers, and reclaim this realm for chaos once and for all!"
Sitting up slightly, Tehthu looked intensely at Xatoc. "Well, Dark Mare, tell me of thy plan."
"Mighty Tehthu, these dreamers use these items for communication. It is the basic way with which they are able to communicate with one another. However, what if we were to invent something better! A similar item, that instead of carrying one message, can have multiple messages on it at once...and, instead of one person having to inscribe on it and then take it to another, we can have it so that one person needs only one codex, and each codex can automatically receive a message put onto another codex, so that they never have to change hands! This would be simple for us Mares to accomplish because the many voices of Chaos could easily transmit messages between this new breed of codi."
Tehthu shifted his stance. "And how, Darkmare, will this aid us in defeating these dreamers?"
"That is the beauty of it, m'lord! See, many of our kin have befriended them already...we simply get our brethren to distribute these codi among the dreamers as gifts from them!"
"We help them? Again, I ask...how does this help us to defeat them?"
"My Dark Lord, these codi can only work by use of Chaos! When we first give them to the dreamer, we will make them completely useful, and helpful. Then, over time, we make minor changes, and slowly, we make it so that we have complete control over the codi by making them completely unusable by any other means! Only items given by us can operate them! Only quills of chaos can inscribe on them, only satchels of chaos can hold them, only people wearing gloves of chaos can write on them, only people wearing goggles of chaos can read them, and only other Chaos Codi can receive the messages, and by the time they realize this, they will be completely dependent on them! The dreamers will be forced to bow to the might of the Darkmares, and we shall have them held forever in our thrall!"
Tehthu's eyes gleamed, and he grinned down at Xatoc. "And, Darkmare, have you thought of a name for this empire of evil you propose creating?"
Xatoc smiled happily. "Yes I have, my liege...I propose we name this empire Marekrosoft!"
