Amtarien was taken from his parents as a child and brought to the Isle of Glass, a fortress maintained by a Great Soceror, Pwyll. Unbeknownst to him, Pwyll had long ago battled and imprisoned his nemesis, Loken, and placed the key in the souls of Amtarien's bloodline. But Loken had powerful allies, and upon this discovery a troupe entered the City with intent to gain the key from Amtarien.

The leader of this troupe was named Aldur. Aldur was a sinister man, and he and the others: Isorn, Sharra, Ehlayna and Mylen, often wandered the Dream City searching for Amtarien, threatening members of the Alliance of the Eclipse and others who sought to protect him. At last the spring day came when Sevanna, Ehlayna, Isorn and Aldur caught Amtarien in the Alliance of the Eclipse, beating him and tormenting him with lurid tales describing the deaths of his loved ones. Despite attempts by Mikwana, Ambi, Revelation, and other friends from the Alliance, Aldur brought forth a dark orb and began to suck Amtarien's soul from his avatar, placing it within the Orb and causing it to glow. Skait, one of Loken's minions, a wurm who had joined with a Darkmare to enter the Dream City, came to the sight to attack those who opposed his master.

The troupe would gather again , journeying to the altar in Threshold Caves to evoke the spell that would free Loken from his prison. This time Morriel joined. The Ceremony progressed, the Orb glowing with Amtarien's soul, lifted from the altar and suspended in mid-air. A cold wind whipped through the room as the words of the ritual were spoken. Isorn shouted: Spirits of Lucidity, Powers of Fire, light this portal as bright as a pyre!" Mylen and Morriel joined in: "Spirits of Insight! Powers of Air! Show him the way… out of his lair!" And finally Aldur shouted: "Spirits of Resilience, power of water, bring Loken now, in this quarter!"

The orb spun rapidly and lightened the room, before Mikwana stepped forward and grabbed it from their reaches. Aldur stopped her with a quick gesture, and the orb rolled on the floor, before being retrieved by Morriel. With the ceremony interrupted, the powers summoned struck Aldur down and vaporized him into nothingness.

Pwyll would return to steal the Orb from Morriel and break it, freeing Amtarien from his confines. Because of the ongoing hunt for his soul, Pwyll placed Orbs around Amtarien's avatar to prevent him from visiting the Dream City for long, in fear that one day Loken's minions would trap him once again.
