The eighth month, Year of the Rebuilding brought great turmoil for the Protectors of the Radiance. An attempted coup d'etat by renegade ruler Hemphop threatened to override the entire structure of the house. Secretly Hemphop, then ruler of the house, initiated and knighted Grimmjack, Domination, HiRoGliFiQ, and Lovetwinkie. They in turn gathered and initiated an army of dreamers, plotting a secret take-over of the house. However, Domination was discovered in threshold one day by a ruler who knew Domination well as a Free Spirit leader of "the Inner Circle." Hemphop's betrayal came to light, and while for one evening the group managed to hold the house, Ka'Lana proclaimed the coup d'etat unlawful and restored ownership to the original Radiance rulers. Hemphop was demoted, and great arguments ensued.

Shortly afterwards, Machiavelli, another original ruler of the Radiance, began strange experiments in attempt to learn Dreamstrike. He executed a long-standing rival, Prince Vorgon in such an experiment, and the effects of his study slowly drove him mad. Machiavelli lost the ability to see his own essences, and developed a powerful craving for the essences of others, at times evoking brawls in the house for the sole purpose of stealing essences off the floor. He, too, was demoted from the house, and as a Free Spirit his madness flourished.
